The federal government has ordered an indefinite suspension of 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ahead of a protest march organized by a religious group.
The Ministry of Interior has formally directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to enforce the suspension across both cities. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has approved the move, which is expected to take effect tonight and will remain in force until further notice, based on how the security situation develops.
The PTA has been instructed to work closely with the Chief Commissioners and Inspectors General of both cities to ensure the implementation of the suspension. Additionally, the telecom authority has been told to remain in constant coordination with law enforcement agencies to help manage communication and uphold security throughout the duration of the protest.
The internet shutdown is part of broader security measures as the religious group prepares to march toward the federal capital. In preparation, authorities have begun placing containers at strategic points across Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Major roads and highways are likely to be blocked, and traffic diversions are being mapped out to regulate movement and maintain law and order.
Security has been ramped up significantly in the twin cities, and officials say the internet suspension is a preventive step aimed at avoiding unrest and the potential spread of misinformation through digital platforms during the demonstration.
