The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), in collaboration with provincial governments, has launched an advanced digital notification system in hospitals and health centers across Pakistan, aiming to streamline the process of registering births and deaths. This new system is designed to be faster, more efficient, and transparent.
Following directives from the Federal Minister for Interior, NADRA is actively working to enhance Pakistan’s civil registration framework and eliminate existing inefficiencies. This effort falls under the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, which was officially approved by the Prime Minister of Pakistan on January 1, 2025.
Currently in its pilot stage, the project will be expanded to a national level once provincial governments are fully prepared for broader implementation. So far, the system has been successfully rolled out in over 50 hospitals and health centers nationwide.
Some of the key hospitals where this system has been introduced include:
- Islamabad: PIMS, CDA Hospital, and Federal Government hospitals
- Lahore: Lady Aitchison Hospital
- Quetta: Bolan Medical College, DHQ, Sheikh Zayed, and Arya Hospital
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: DHQ Hospitals in Haripur and Batkhela
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir: DHQ Hospital Mirpur
- Gilgit-Baltistan: Shaheed Syed Rehman Hospital
- Sindh: Various hospitals and Basic Health Units (BHUs) in Hyderabad and Matiari
This digital mechanism enables real-time transfer of birth and death notifications from healthcare facilities directly to NADRA. Parents or legal heirs of deceased individuals receive timely alerts via mobile app notifications and SMS, guiding them on how to complete the registration at their respective Union Councils.
To date, NADRA has received more than 4,000 birth notifications and 407 death notifications through this automated system.
Citizens now have the option to register a birth or death using the NADRA Mobile App or by visiting their nearest Union Council office. The pilot phase is already underway in three districts of Punjab and is expected to expand across the province soon.
Plans are also in motion to extend this modern notification system to both public and private health institutions in other regions of the country. Once fully rolled out, this initiative will provide convenient and efficient registration services to citizens all over Pakistan.
