Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry informed the National Assembly that while cryptocurrency is currently being regulated in Pakistan, it has not been formally recognized as legal tender. During a recent question hour session, the minister clarified that the government maintains a neutral stance on digital currencies — neither endorsing nor opposing their use.

He emphasized that the key focus is on preventing the misuse of cryptocurrencies, especially in illegal financial activities. To that end, regulatory measures are being put in place. The minister also noted that the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister is actively managing cryptocurrency-related affairs to ensure a well-structured and secure regulatory framework.

The issue was raised by Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, who questioned the legal standing of cryptocurrency in Pakistan and highlighted concerns raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). In response, Chaudhry stated that the government is actively working to address these issues by formulating comprehensive regulations.

He reassured the Assembly that all relevant aspects — including international obligations and financial safety standards — are being taken into account as Pakistan moves toward establishing a clear and compliant approach to digital assets.
